I learned early in my career that experience isn’t just about years in the business—it’s about the depth and variety of challenges you’ve overcome. This lesson came to me the hard way, through a personal experience that ultimately shaped my entire approach to mortgage lending.
I was a naive first-time homebuyer once. My wife and I walked into an office of a national lender/broker, full of hope and excitement about purchasing our first home. Our loan officer was a manager there with 18 years of experience who promised us the world. After we lost the first house, we gave him another chance—maybe it was just bad luck. But after losing the second house, my wife was inconsolable. My only “issue” was that I was self-employed.
What I needed was someone who could think outside the box. Doing traditional loans day-in, day-out does not count as years of experience. That painful experience taught me that when conventional lenders fail their clients, there’s usually a creative solution waiting to be discovered.
This story is exactly why I became a mortgage broker. I refuse to let any client go through what my wife and I endured. When your bank says NO, call me.
Like I always say: “If it CAN be done, it WILL be done.”
